Putting the B back in bounce, without the soreness!

After being put through my paces in a dressage lesson one day, I found that my breasts were quite sore, and it's not like I'm blessed with enormous ones to flaunt around, my bra fitted correctly and I felt like I was riding properly; so why did they feel tender?

Once home I decided to sit on good old google and found a recent study conducted by Dr Jenny Burbage, a biomechanics specialist at the University of Portsmouth, and Lorna Cameron, of Sparsholt College.

They found that 40% of 1,324 riders surveyed experienced breast pain, and less than 35% of these riders wear sports bras whilst riding. Shockingly, 59% of participants reported bra-related issues as well.

With the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) reporting that over 74% of riders are women, you'd think there would be more support out there to help us decide on the best bras out there and support, for when riding.

A good sports bra will limit excessive movement using various tricks and technologies, so the impact on the ligament is contained and breast tissues will be better protected from damage.

The old myth that only big-breasted sportswomen need sports bras is absolutely 100% wrong. Not only do small breasts bounce around, but they are moving in three-ways: up, down and sideways. According to Shock Absorber research, 44% of women who exercise regularly, don't wear sports bras and astonishingly, it reported that even small breast move 40mm away from the body.

Now, I don't mean to scare you, but those who regularly exercise without wearing the correct support could be causing 'breast droop', which can happen to breasts of all shapes and sizes when not supported but bounced around, and the ligament is being stretched.

I was absolutely adamant I didn't need a sports bra and even more adamant they were all ugly and rather unappealing to me. That was until the company 'boobydoo' was mentioned to me in a passing conversation.

They make all types of sports bras and have a bra aimed at horse-riders, that is designed to reduce pressure tension on the shoulders and block breast movement.

I must admit, I was wondering what come out the packaging when I opened it up. I had visions of the horrid sports bras I'd seen in the past and vowed never to touch, but honestly I was pleasantly surprised.

Upon initial inspection, the bra didn't look like a sports bra, but more of your normal everyday wear that you do your shopping in, muck the horse out in and then attend a night out at the pub in. It was a thumbs up so far from me!

When I got it out the packaging I had a look at what made this bra different from the type I could buy on my local high-street shop, and then I realised why.

The cups offer full coverage and are specially moulded which offers a natural fit and helps minimise bounce when doing any kind of horse-riding, from your everyday hacking, right through to eventing.

One thing I always find with my everyday bra is usually when it comes to riding in them, I find the straps quickly become uncomfortable and dig into my back, especially if I'm wearing my body protector.

However, this bra has lightly padded straps which are not only comfortable but didn't dig into me when it came to jumping and having to ride in my body protector. Even better, the nude colour was discreet under my show shirt meaning I didn't have to be conscientious about needing to wear a vest top underneath my shirt. Bonus, especially in summer when the less layers, the better!

Since being a small child, I've always found tags of any shape or size on clothes irritating and there's nothing worse than having a rolled up tag on your bra irritating you whilst you're trying to focus on a dressage test, but thankfully this bra has none and the buckles at the back are fully padded, so not only do you have no tags digging into your spine, but there's also no pesky bra clips causing you concern whilst you're trying to concentrate!

Overall I was very impressed, and even more so after realising I'd just done a 45-minute intense dressage session with my horse, and yet I didn't feel irritable and sweaty in all the wrong places like you do with normal, everyday bras. Amazingly, the wire channeling on this wicks away the sweat leaving you dry and comfortable even after riding in the midday sun!

With this bra you can kiss goodbye to sweaty, post exercise breasts that feel achy and that horrible scratching on your back from bra clips if you've rushed and not ensured the padding is down flat. It reduced the bounce and movement a significant amount and for the first time I felt comfortable and was able to sustain sitting in trot for longer than just a couple of minutes. It was that comfortable I almost forgot I was wearing it - which for me is great as I usually find some bras really uncomfortable, depending how the wire sits.

9/10 for this super bra, and it's only not a 10 because I'd still like it to be a little more 'sexy', but then I was comfortable, so for me it was a win! Small breasted ladies, I even urge you to have a look! For just £35, you too can ride comfortably and put the bounce back in those flying changes rather than your breasts!

For more information go to the boobydoo website where you can also purchase matching briefs! Now that's tempting...

Macwet Gloves - All grip, no slip

I will be honest and openly say I barely ever ride in gloves - only when absolute necessary and it's too cold to grip my reins. Not because I don't want to, but for the fact I cannot find any that both suit me and aren't too bulky. So, when I was asked to write a review about the Macwet gloves, I eagerly accepted - with the hope of finding something comfortable I could ride in.

MacWet gloves are the 'all grip, no slip' technology advanced gloves which soon became a global sensation. Their versatility means they can be used for practically any sport or activity where grip and sensitivity are required. From Equestrian, Golf, Shooting, Fishing, Cycling, Water sports, right through to Archer, Dog Walking and Quad Biking, MacWet gloves will ensure you don't lose your grip in any activity.

I was sent the Sport Gloves in black.

Upon opening the MacWet gloves package I was rather impressed to find the packing was made of a good quality plastic with information on both sides about their product. The packaging also features a hand measure to help you work out what size you are should you try these on at a show, in a shop or at an event. For those buying off the internet there is also a really good hand measuring tool on the MacWet website, which helps you find the perfect size too.

My initial reaction was that the packaging was decent, but surely nearly £30 for a pair of gloves was a little extreme. I have paid this before for some good quality showing gloves however every time I have gone to wash them I haven't been able to use them since because they have gone hard and crusty. MacWet had a lot to live up to.

As soon as I put the gloves on they felt nice and not too bulky. For once I didn't feel like I couldn't move my hand and fingers when wearing a pair of gloves. The inside was nice and not itchy like I have found other gloves to be. I felt like I could ride using them and still get the "feel" of the rein, unlike with other gloves which are too bulky for my hands. They fasten up using a durable Velcro strip which is elegantly finished off with the MacWet gold logo.

During a lesson in the pouring down rain (yes I am really that mad) the gloves still sustained their grip and didn't feel like I had to peel them off my hands once I had finished. When I got home that night I was also able to put them in the washing machine and although I worried about them going hard and crusty like my previous pairs they didn't and I was able to use them again.

Equally, when I hacked out in the boiling heat the day before I wasn't left with sweaty, clammy hands after taking the Macwets off. I was impressed!

I rarely show jump, but ensured for this review I did a bit of everything, from hacking, to dressage to jumping and even putting the jumps away afterwards. One day it was pouring with rain whilst using the gloves and another the sun was belting down. However the fabric used in these gloves allows the hand to breathe so I was ensured a comfortable grip without getting too hot nor too cold. They really are made for a variety of weather climates.

Not once did I feel like MacWet couldn't stand up to the test of what I wanted them for and what made it even better is I literally forgot I had them on at times because they are that comfy.

MacWet gloves come in a variety of both sizes and colours including: Green, Black, Brown, Navy and White.

Although a little apprehensive at first, I would highly reccomend MacWet gloves to anyone like myself, who has spent endless amounts of wages on gloves that just don't live up to the test. MacWet can offer something for everyone despite what sport you're involved in. They have definitely got me on board as a new customer.

Now, if anyone wants to treat me to a white pair for dressage - feel free! :)

5/5 for these fantastic gloves!

One more step around the world I go...

So, I had to update and let you know what I've been up to this week. Despite it only being Wednesday I have had an action packed week that its making me tired just thinking about it.

I also have so much planned for the next up and coming few weeks that I am beginning to wish there were more hours in a day and more days in a week.

A few days after I graduated back in July I made the exciting decision I wanted to go back to university and get a higher level degree in some form of Journalism and ideally Sports Journalism. I knew I didn't want to leave the horses again and move away from home so I decided that I would look what the University of Lincoln had to offer. Thankfully they had a Masters degree Sports Journalism course and so I set about the difficult task of applying to get on to it.

I don't know why but I found applying for university this time round much more complex. At least for my undergraduate degree I had 5 options of where I could study and UCAS did most of the hard work for me. This was left up to me and it was worrying thinking how on earth I would pay for the masters course - with there being no student finance options. I had to write a 450 word personal statement basically saying why I deserved a place on the course, what qualities I would bring and why I had a passion for journalism.

A couple of weeks ago I submitted my application and all I could do was hope for the best. It was an agonising wait but sure enough that email arrived to tell me I had been accepted simply based on my references! I was over the moon to say the least.

My NCTJ accredited course at De Montfort University wasn't sports based at all. I could have chosen a sports journalism module to take in the third year but after discussing with the module leader what would be covered during the year I decided it wasn't the module for me. If I was going to do to sports I needed a course that didn't focus on the popular sports, like football, rugby and cricket. Equestrian journalism is such a niche market and I accept that, but I knew I needed a course that would allow me to explore equestrian journalism. So, in my final year at DMU I chose to study magazine journalism instead and absolutely loved it.

So, as you can imagine, being given the opportunity to study a sports journalism course is rather exciting. We are allowed to explore which sports we wish and unlike my undergraduate degree focuses a lot on broadcasting and radio; something I have not studied before.

Yesterday I traveled to Lincoln to enroll and am really looking forward to starting next week properly. I cannot wait to see what opportunities this course brings me - especially after the course leaders saying how many fantastic contacts they have. I am sure I will enjoy it. Look out for further updates as I now take you on my journey through a masters degree. I am adamant it will mean lots more hard work and time, but if it means I get the job I want because of it then I feel it is well worth the time, effort and money.

What makes it even more better is that I can stay at home whilst studying this time, meaning I don't  have to leave the horses behind during the week. This is something I found difficult during the three years of my undergraduate degree and am thankful I have the support to be able to stay near to home this time.

**

Now, in horsey news, I am rather excited to introduce a new instructor of mine. I am having my first lesson with her on Sunday and am really looking forward to it. I haven't had a lesson in quite a while due to limited funds, but thankfully now I have my small job I can afford to have a lesson every so often. I am working on doing a medium dressage test over the winter and getting some dressage qualifications under our belt early on. My dressage score sheets always tell me I am pushing Ceaser on too much so this is something I really want to work it. His paces and collections have improved tremendously over the past few months so I cannot wait to be out competing in dressage again very soon!

I also have a new farrier and am absolutely thrilled with the work he has already done. He goes out of his way to please his customers, offer them advice and explain what he is doing and why. I told him I thought Ceaser's feet were too long and I wanted him to go without toe clips from now as it looked neater for when I am competing. Going without toe clips can help a horses conformation in more ways than one; not only does it make the feet look straighter if they aren't already, but it also doesn't show up conformation issues should there be any. I'm lucky Ceaser has good conformation but like the overall picture of clip-less shows better for when competing. Anyway, he obliged and agreed and has done a fantastic job on Ceaser's feet. I was sad to see my old farrier go but we are still in touch. Unfortunately he lives quite far from our yard and couldn't justify coming over this far anymore when he was so busy closer to home. However, we are all thrilled with the new one and happy with the results so far.

I also cannot believe how quickly HOYS is approaching. I still haven't booked my hotel for the few days I am there reporting. On the Friday the whole of the yard is going for a yard trip so that will be lovely. I think though that I need to get saving as can see it being very expensive with all those tempting stalls to shop on.....
